My paintings engage with emotional states, place and identity through color, texture and mark making. I am inspired by twentieth century Abstract Expressionism, pre-historical Nyero rock paintings in Uganda, and my experience of the natural beauty of the Burren in Ireland. I primarily work with ink, graphite pencils and pen on paper. These drawings are enlarged into acrylic and oil using brushes, tooth brushes, forks, spoons, sticks, threads and my hands. I use the materials of fashion design: buttons, zippers and threads to create texture and incorporate African fabrics and patterns to represent my identity. The stitched circular holes symbolise my fears about expressing my innermost emotions. They also reveal my interest in ritualism through repetitive sewing, patching, cutting, tracing, folding, mending and adorning.
